Petr Bojda, Ph.D.: Air Traffic Surveillance Method using an existing network of DME navigation system

Tue, 11/01/2016

Everyone is warmly welcome to attend the seminar with a guest speaker - Dr. Petr Bojda. The seminar will take place in K26 lab and will start at 11:00am. It will take 60 minutes including discussions.

Besides the actual technical content of the talk, which need not be very familiar to control engineers (see the abstract below), Dr. Bojda will also share some experience(s) from his three-year position as a Research Assistant Professor at the Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. If anyone is interested in having some more communication with Dr. Bojda after the lunch time, he is available in the afternoon for some meetings.

Abstract: Recent trend is to use an independent primary radar to detect non-cooperative targets and ADS system in a couple of its varieties to detect and locate properly equipped air traffic. There exist other systems, either under development or already matured and implemented, able to detect aircrafts in a specific area. Those are for instance PCL (Passive Coherence Location) or multilateration TDOA passive radars. Presented is a method capable of detecting and finally locating an air vehicle which is currently using RNAV DME-DME method to measure its own positions. It works without need for other system or signal. Detection and localization of the aircraft can be done from a single point (an observer). The method was developed as part of my research activities when I worked as a Research Assistant Professor at the Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. With a generous support from Rockwell Collins Charitable Corporation I had a chance to form and supervise a team of students and verify the concept of the method. Established Capstone Design project included HW and SW development following a process based upon an agile methodology (Scrum) and working in a cross-disciplinary team. Students used the most recent RF technology to prepare both ground-based and flight tests.
